Station Numbers Dwindle.

Where are Broadcast Pro's Going?

July 20, 2023

As the number of traditional stations sinks in an ever-evolving industry,

traditional broadcasters are finding new opportunities online. According to recent data from the FCC, the number of commercial FM stations has declined slightly, with 53 fewer stations compared to mid-2019. However, Broadcast Buzz notes that many broadcasters are successfully pivoting to online streaming stations to engage wider audiences.

While commercial FMs decline, noncommercial FMs see an increase, with 57 more stations compared to mid-2019. But the AM dial is where the real struggles remain, with licensed AM stations at the lowest level in decades and 35 fewer stations over the past year. Even FM translator growth has slowed.

There are positive signs, however, including the FCC's plans to open a filing window for new low-power FMs this November. This will be the first opportunity in a decade for new LPFM construction permits. Broadcast Buzz is ready to help clients capitalize on this LPFM opportunity. With a suite of services, from technology solutions to traditional format elements, Broadcast Buzz is ready with solutions for broadcasters to navigate industry changes and build successful stations on-air and online.
